US President Donald Trump sacked Kristi Noem, his far-right Homeland Security Secretary, over her leadership role on the brutal immigration crackdown and disaster response.
During President Trump’s second term, Ms. Noem became the first Cabinet secretary to be fired.
The sacking came after persistent criticism over her leadership of the department, including how she handled the administration’s harsh immigration crackdown and disaster response.
Following Ms. Noem’s two-day interrogation on Capitol Hill this week, President Trump announced on social media that he would replace her with another far-right enthusiast, Oklahoma Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin.
She was criticised during the hearing for a $220 million (about £165 million) advertising campaign that featured Ms. Noem and urged illegal immigrants to leave the country voluntarily.

Ms. Noem informed parliamentarians that the president was aware of it prior to it, but the president stated in a later interview that he did not approve of the campaign.
Secretary Noem has also been under fire for her actions following the shooting deaths of two demonstrators in Minneapolis earlier this year, when she accused the victims, Alex Pretti and Renee Good, of being domestic terrorists.
On January 7, a federal immigration officer shot and murdered Ms. Good, a mother of three. While documenting enforcement actions, federal authorities shot Mr. Pretti, a nurse. Both led to large-scale demonstrations calling Ms. Noem’s removal and a stop to the brutality.
President Trump declared that Ms. Noem “has served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!)” as he fired her.
He declared that he was appointing her as a “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” a vague new security program that would concentrate on the western hemisphere.
In a social media post, Ms. Noem thanked President Trump for the new position and asserted—without providing any proof—that she had made “historic accomplishments” at the Department of Homeland Security.
