Tensions flared between Washington and Paris after Donald Trump mocked Emmanuel Macron and his wife, triggering outrage across the French political class.
The US president, speaking during a private engagement, imitated a French accent and claimed that Macron’s wife “treats him extremely badly,” a remark widely condemned in France as disrespectful and inappropriate, especially amid ongoing global security tensions.
Reacting swiftly, French National Assembly President, Yael Braun-Pivet, criticised Trump’s comments, stressing the seriousness of current geopolitical issues.
“Honestly, it’s not up to par… we are currently discussing the future of the world… and we have a president who is laughing, who is mocking others,” she said.
Interestingly, even critics of Macron rallied to his defence. Manuel Bompard, a leading opposition figure, described Trump’s remarks as unacceptable.
“You are aware of the extent of my disagreements with the president, but for Donald Trump to speak to him like that and to speak of his wife in such a manner I find that absolutely unacceptable,” he said.

The controversial comments were reportedly linked to a previously circulated video involving Brigitte Macron, which had been dismissed by the French president as misinformation, insisting the moment was merely playful.
Beyond the personal jabs, Trump also used the opportunity to criticise North Atlantic Treaty Organization, questioning its reliability and describing it as a “paper tiger” amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.
He recounted a conversation in which he allegedly asked Macron for military support, claiming the French leader declined immediate involvement a narrative that has not been officially confirmed by Paris.
The latest episode underscores growing strain within transatlantic relations, particularly as disagreements deepen over security cooperation and responses to the escalating conflict in Iran.
With both rhetoric and diplomacy now colliding, the fallout from Trump’s remarks could further test already fragile ties between the United States and its European allies.
