Tragedy struck in Enugu yesterday when a train driver ran into buses and traders at the popular Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, killing an elderly man.
Several people were also injured as the train which was on top speed arrived without the usual blaring of horn to alert other road users.
The train is believed to be returning from Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
A witness said the train had nearly smashed a commercial tricyclist at the Zik Avenue intersection before getting to the Ogbete market intersection which was always blocked by vehicles.
One of the drivers who narrowly escaped death during the incident said; “If not God who moved the vehicles out miraculously, we all would have been killed.”
The Enugu State Police Command’s spokesman, Ebere Amarizu, confirmed the incident, describing it as horrible.”
