A devastating incident has shaken the community of Angwan Nungu in Lafia, Nasarawa State, as a 35-year-old man, Hassan Bayaro, allegedly took his own life due to overwhelming debts and personal struggles.
Bayaro, a resident of Giza town in Keana local government area, was found dead in his apartment last Saturday, June 22nd, with a decomposing corpse that had begun to emit a foul odour.
According to sources close to the family, Bayaro had been battling multiple debts totalling over N8 million, which had become unbearable for him.
The victim was a graduate of Mass Communication from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and worked as a teacher at St. James Secondary School, Lafia. He was also involved in the property business, buying and selling houses and lands.
Investigations revealed that Bayaro had sent a text message to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) threatening to commit suicide due to the debts and his failed attempt to marry a lady from Doma, who was of a different faith.
In an interview with DSC Victor Jerry, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NSCDC, Nasarawa State command, confirmed the incident, stating that “our men swung into action and met him in school, but unfortunately, we couldn’t save him.”
Bayaro’s friends, who wished to remain anonymous, disclosed that he had been struggling with the debts and had become withdrawn in recent weeks.
The NSCDC PRO added that Bayaro’s family had also received a threatening text message from him, stating that he would commit suicide if he was not allowed to marry his girlfriend.
The community is still reeling in shock over the tragic incident, with many describing Bayaro as a friendly and hardworking individual.
The decomposed body of the victim was buried last Saturday according to Islamic rites.
“We are still trying to come to terms with this tragic loss,” said a friend of the deceased. “We hope that his story will serve as a warning to others struggling with similar issues.”
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of debt and personal struggles, and the need for support systems to help individuals in crisis.
