Dr. George Agbakahi, a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated his confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is still the candidate to defeat as political alliances gain traction ahead of the general election in 2027. He insists that the election will be decided by the president’s performance in office.

In an interview with ARISE News on Wednesday, Agbakahi stated that the President’s accomplishments offer a solid basis for a campaign for a second term. “The President will run based on his past performance. He has a proven track record of success,” he said.

He claimed that when Tinubu took power, Nigeria’s economy was in disarray due to a fraudulent fuel subsidy system and what he called an artificial exchange rate regime. He maintained that by eliminating subsidies and changing foreign exchange regulations, the president brought about “a paradigm shift.”

Agbakahi mentioned gains in important economic metrics, such as foreign reserves. “When President Tinubu came on board, our foreign reserve was about 34 billion. As we speak today, it’s 49 billion. So a lot is happening,” he said.

He agreed that there is still suffering associated with the expense of living, but he insisted that there have been noticeable improvements over time. At first, it was challenging. He acknowledged that it is still difficult, but that food costs are starting to decline.

Additionally, he cited higher federal funding for states, claiming that governors have been able to carry out infrastructure projects nationwide thanks to FAAC’s increased payouts.

Agbakahi addressed the debate surrounding the Electoral Act Amendment Bill and backed the National Assembly’s choice to continue transmitting results manually in the event of a technical malfunction.

“You know very well that we are running a democracy, a three-tier system of government. The National Assembly is independent of the executive,” he said.

He insisted that a manual backup option is justified due to infrastructure issues and technical glitches. “If there is a computer glitch… that particular community, their vote is not going either to the local government or to the national. That is the reality,” he explained.

Agbakahi went on to highlight Form EC8A’s ongoing significance in Nigeria’s electoral system, calling it “the nucleus of our electoral system.”

The APC chieftain maintained that the president’s record will ultimately determine the 2027 election, despite the heated discussions about reforms and transparency. He reaffirmed, “President Tinubu will run on his record.”
