The Nigeria Police Force on Monday held a memorial service at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, in honour of 10 officers of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) who were killed in the line of duty in Kebbi State.
Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Ani Iniedu disclosed this in a statement.
The police officers died on August 10 during an encounter with suspected bandits along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area.
They were part of a team that engaged a heavily armed group of bandits moving between Zamfara and Kebbi States.
According to the police, the encounter inflicted significant losses on the attackers, while the officers fought with courage in defence of lives and national security.
The service featured prayers for the fallen officers, with senior police officers, colleagues and families of the deceased in attendance to pay tribute to their service and sacrifice.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, described the deceased as gallant personnel who paid the supreme price while protecting lives and property.
He extended the force’s condolences to their families and assured them of continued support.
The IGP said, “The force will not be intimidated or relent in the fight against banditry, terrorism and other forms of violent criminality.
“The sacrifices of the fallen heroes will not be in vain. We will continue to identify, pursue and bring to justice those responsible for attacks on Police personnel and innocent citizens.”
Commander of the Special Intervention Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle said subsequent operational assessments showed that losses inflicted on the attackers were significantly higher than the initial assessment.
He urged SIS personnel not to waver, but to continue the fight with the same courage and determination shown by their colleagues.
Speaking on behalf of the bereaved families, Grace Bala Buba, daughter of one of the fallen officers, thanked the Nigeria Police Force for honouring the officers and for the support extended to the families.
The IGP urged police personnel to remember the fallen officers with pride and gratitude, and reaffirmed the force’s resolve to sustain operations against banditry and terrorism, strengthen collaboration with stakeholders, and ensure that those responsible for attacks on officers and citizens are brought to justice.
