In a swift diplomatic move, President Bola Tinubu participated on Thursday in an emergency virtual meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address the unfolding political crisis in Guinea-Bissau, following Wednesday’s military coup.

The extraordinary session, held via Zoom, brought together West African heads of state and government to coordinate responses to the crisis. According to reports, Guinea-Bissau’s military, after detaining President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, named General Horta Nta Na Man as interim leader for the next twelve months.

Photographs released by the State House Media Department showed President Tinubu actively engaged from Abuja during the high-level summit.

Tinubu notably chaired the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for two terms until June 2025, when he was succeeded by Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio.
ECOWAS continues to face growing challenges from repeated coup attempts in the region. This emergency summit highlights the bloc’s resolve to defend stability and democratic governance across West Africa.
