President Bola Tinubu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have pledged to deepen bilateral relations, focusing on collaboration in security, power, railways, creative arts and skill development, according to a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The leaders reached this resolution during a concise telephone conversation on Wednesday afternoon, which lasted from 2:01 p.m. to around 2:10 p.m.
Discussions centred on the Presidential Power Initiative, where Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s need for assistance in power transmission. Merz responded positively, assuring that Siemens stands ready to provide support, with Deutsche Bank prepared to finance the project.
Security concerns in the Sahel region also featured prominently.
Tinubu urged Germany to supply used helicopters for intelligence reconnaissance, stating, “The Sahel corridor is bad and needs our support. Intelligence support reconnaissance is needed.”
Merz echoed worries about the Sahel and expressed eagerness for Nigeria’s new ambassador to arrive in Germany. He also advocated stronger cultural ties, calling for the establishment of the Great Museum of African Arts.
Both leaders highlighted 65 years of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Germany, signalling fresh momentum in strategic partnerships.
