President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Tunde Onakoya for breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon and for exemplifying the spirit of resilience, self-belief, and ingenuity of Nigeria on the global stage.

Onakoya, a Nigerian Chess Champion and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, played for over 58 hours straight and won every match, all while raising funds for African children to learn and find opportunities through chess.

In a statement released by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu praised Onakoya for his remarkable achievement and for the motivation behind it, stating, “This is a rare feat, especially for the reason driving this compelling demonstration of character, which is raising funds for African children to learn and find opportunity through chess.”

The President also commended Onakoya for showcasing the audacity and resilience that is characteristic of Nigeria’s youth population, stating that they have the ability to make positive change happen and to innovate and find solutions to the nation’s challenges, even from disadvantaged positions.

Tinubu also highlighted the unity of Nigerians, who have shown support for this historic achievement, transcending artificial divisions. He assured all citizens that his administration remained committed to creating and expanding opportunities for the youth to explore and exercise their abilities and become symbols of greatness for the nation’s future.
