Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has said President Bola Tinubu is focused on addressing the root causes of insecurity across the country and the wider West African region.

Ibrahim made this known after presenting his Letter of Credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York.

According to him, Tinubu believes resolving long-standing grievances driving conflicts remains key to restoring peace and stability.

He said the President is committed to tackling “religious conflicts and other crises, which stem from long-standing grievances,” stressing that addressing them would strengthen safety for citizens.

Ibrahim noted that Nigeria is also seeking stronger international support to confront security challenges at home, while working with partners to manage threats across the Sahel and the West African sub-region.

He described his appointment as coming at a critical time, marking Nigeria’s return to full diplomatic engagement at the UN after over two years without a substantive representative.

“President Tinubu is confident that, as Nigeria’s ambassador and head of mission to the UN, I will work hand-in-hand with you to tackle the issues we share,” he said.

The envoy also reaffirmed Nigeria’s position on global reforms, backing a stronger African presence at the UN Security Council, which he described as vital for collective security.

On the economy, Ibrahim acknowledged that ongoing reforms may be difficult in the short term but insisted they are laying the groundwork for long-term growth.

“All reforms in the short run come with one form of pain or the other, but the results have been remarkable,” he said.

He added that Nigeria would continue to push for global cooperation on tax reforms, climate action and peace-building efforts, while playing a leading role in advancing the UN’s goals across Africa.
