President Bola Tinubu has announced critical appointments to the governing councils of major federal universities, as well as principal officers for the newly established Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State.
He appointed Chisom Obih to the Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State to fill the vacancy left by the recent passing of a council member.
Tinubu also appointed Ralph Akinfeleye, communications expert, to the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Akinfeleye, former head of the department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, brings a wealth of experience from his leadership of the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography, along with his stewardship of UNILAG Radio 103.1 FM and Television. He previously served on the Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, and now replaces Wahab Owokoniran, who was recently appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Federal University of Transport in Daura, Katsina State.
Ibrahim Yakasai was named Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Hamisu Yelwa, registrar, Usman Sanusi, bursar and Shehu Liman librarian.
Yakasai brings on board an illustrious background blending academic distinction and military discipline. A retired Colonel in the Nigerian Army, he currently serves as Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Bayero University, Kano. He also chairs the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria and is a member of the Governing Council at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo.
Highlighting his qualifications, the statement read: “Prof. Yakasai obtained his MBBS at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, before earning a European Economic Commission scholarship to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom. He achieved membership and fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, followed by a Master’s in Medical Education from the University of Winchester. His pursuits in the United States include the Fellowship of the International College of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.”
Yakasai also served as Director-General of the Hospitals Management Board in Kano State, bringing invaluable administrative expertise to his new role.
