Three North Koreans were tied to stakes and riddled with more than 90 bullets each for daring to flee the communist enclave.

According to Daily Mail, two of the victims were brothers with the surname Kim and their friend named Ri.

The incident occurred in the village of Songjong-ri, in South Hwanghae province.

The three men, all in their 30s, had attempted to cross into neighbouring South Korea using a small boat on January 6.

However, they were intercepted by a North Korean patrol boat, which arrested them.

An eyewitness said the men were dragged out, blindfolded and bound before being executed before a crowd of frightened locals, including children.

A team of 10 executioners reportedly fired nine bullets at each man, totalling 90 bullets each per victim.

The witness said the bodies were set ablaze after the public execution.
