While most know him for his soaring soprano solos and stage presence across Nigeria and abroad, Engr. Oluwaseun Ezekiel Ilesanmi carries another calling just as powerful, to teach, mentor, and nurture emerging voices in the ministry of classical music.

From voice workshops in Nigeria and Qatar to online coaching sessions that reach across time zones, Ezekiel’s music journey has evolved from a personal pursuit into a platform to raise others. Today, he stands not only as a respected performer but also as a voice coach, choir patron, and mentor to many.

“I believe music is not meant to end with us,” he says. “We must pass it on, not just the sound, but the discipline, the fire, and the values that shape it.”

More Than a Singer, A Shepherd of Sound

Ezekiel currently mentors aspiring singers both online and in physical sessions. His teaching goes beyond notes and breath control. He focuses on spiritual grounding, posture, interpretation, and emotional connection.

He also organizes voice workshops for choirs across Nigeria, especially within church settings, and was instrumental in voice-building efforts during his time in Qatar. His role as Patron of the RCCG Jesus Delegate Choir in Ibadan is a reflection of his deep commitment to nurturing excellence in Christian music.

When asked about what he looks for in a singer, he says, “Passion can be seen. I look for hunger, those who want to grow, who can submit to training and rise into their own sound.”

Anchored in the Church

Much of Ezekiel’s strength comes from his foundation in the Anglican church. He is deeply connected to Cathedral of St. Paul’s, Iloro, Ilesha, as well as All Saints Anglican Church, Ikosi-Ketu, and continues to minister through these and other churches across the country.

Through weddings, funerals, carols, and solemn services, his voice has become a familiar presence in both Eastern and Western Nigeria. Whether in a high cathedral or a small parish, his goal remains the same: to worship with depth and lead others into divine encounters.

Discipline, Fasting, and Focus

For Ezekiel, singing is spiritual warfare, and preparation is both physical and spiritual. Before every major ministration, he enters a time of fasting and prayer.

“I don’t just rehearse,” he says. “I consecrate myself. Songs become weapons in the hands of a spiritually ready vessel.”

His vocal preparation includes intensive rehearsals, learning songs inside-out, and revisiting technical elements such as phrasing, dynamics, and control. He believes that spiritual depth and musical mastery must walk hand in hand for a voice to carry lasting impact.

Recognitions, Awards, and Testimonies

Though Ezekiel doesn’t sing for accolades, his work has not gone unnoticed. He has received awards including Best Soloist in several settings and has been invited repeatedly to high-profile services and platforms, including church media broadcasts, state functions, and interdenominational programs.

But to him, the most rewarding part remains the testimonies. Many have come forward to share how his music led them to healing, conviction, or a renewed hunger for God.

“Someone once said my voice reminded them of heaven,” he smiles. “But the goal isn’t the applause. It’s the transformation.”

The Vision Ahead

Ezekiel dreams of building a network of classically trained, Spirit-filled singers across Africa. He envisions releasing albums, holding city-wide concerts, and creating a platform for excellence in sacred music.

“In five years, I want to be known not just as a soloist, but as a steward. I want to open doors for others the way doors were opened for me. Classical music is not dead, it’s alive with worship, and we will carry it to the nations.”
