ITELE’s FREEDOM Collection enters the menswear space with a clear message, design can carry history, but it still needs to function.

Designer Seyi Agboola tackles the challenge by building the collection on the dependable structure of the penny loafer and upgrading it with solid materials, full-grain leather uppers, leather lining, and Gumlite soles. The result is footwear that feels strong, lightweight, and ready for real use.
Each pair uses the same construction, cement, which keeps the shoe flexible while still allowing repair or resoling. This matters because the collection is designed with long-term symbolism in mind, not quick trend cycles. The embroidered motifs and zinc-alloy details are more than decoration, they’re visual statements tied to parts of Nigeria’s political history.
THE BILL is the boldest design and the one most likely to divide opinion. The embroidered pound and dollar notes are a direct reference to the financial influence foreign powers once had over Nigeria. The idea is smart and timely. The execution is mostly solid. But the embroidery is thick enough in some areas to add visual weight, which challenges the natural sleekness of the penny loafer form. It’s not a deal-breaker, the full-grain leather grounds the design well, but a bit more spacing could improve versatility. Still, THE BILL succeeds as a statement piece and delivers the clearest message in the collection.
THE HIVE is the strongest design from a craftsmanship perspective. The bee embroidery is mapped carefully along the contours of the shoe. It avoids clutter and enhances the leather instead of covering it. This is the pair that shows Seyi’s improving control of technical details. It’s clean, modern, and much easier to style than THE BILL, but still rich in meaning. The idea of unity and collective effort translates well into a men’s footwear context, and the lightweight Gumlite sole gives this pair the best comfort-to-structure ratio in the lineup.
BUTTONS is the easiest to wear and the lightest in symbolism. The zinc-alloy button detailing represents abundance and stability, important themes, but not as visually commanding as the other motifs. This design leans heavily toward minimalism. It’s polished, stable, and commercially smart, but slightly conservative in creativity. For buyers who value subtlety, BUTTONS will be the standout. But compared to the boldness of THE BILL and the technical strength of THE HIVE, it feels more like the safe option.
What makes the FREEDOM Collection work overall is its clarity. The materials are dependable, the construction is practical, and the design ideas are direct. The shoes feel good in hand, the leather is firm but smooth, the lining soft, and the Gumlite outsole offers traction without the weight of traditional rubber soles. These choices make the collection suitable for real, everyday use while still carrying deeper meaning.
Still, there’s room for refinement. THE BILL would benefit from slightly lighter embroidery. BUTTONS could push its creativity further. THE HIVE gets the closest to perfection, but even here, a more daring layout could help lift the symbolism even more.
Even with these assessments, FREEDOM stands strong. It shows a designer who understands where men’s footwear is headed, toward items that mean something without giving up comfort or practicality. Seyi Agboola demonstrates that storytelling in menswear doesn’t need to be loud. It just needs to be honest and well-made.
And with full-grain leather, durable construction, and a sharp message, ITELE’s FREEDOM Collection checks those boxes.
