The remains of Mama Sarah Abike Gandonu, a dedicated nurse whose career spanned Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States, were laid to rest recently in her country home at Agbado-Ope Ilu, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The burial ceremony drew mourners from across Nigeria and the diaspora and was marked by profound grief, heartfelt tributes, and reflections on a life defined by selfless service, unwavering faith, and enduring love.
Mama Gandonu who passed away at the age of 75, began her professional journey at Ikeja General Hospital in Lagos State, where her commitment and skill propelled her to the role of Senior Nursing Sister at the Staff Clinic, Alausa Secretariat. She later retired from public service in Nigeria as a matron, having touched countless lives through compassionate care.
After retirement, she joined her husband in the United Kingdom, continuing her noble profession as a registered nurse. She eventually relocated to the United States, where she served faithfully until her final retirement in 2012.
Throughout her career, Mama Gandonu exemplified dedication to healing and humanity, earning respect and admiration from colleagues and patients alike.
The funeral service featured a touching sermon by The Rt. Rev’d Peter Mayungbo, Bishop of the United African Methodist Church, Lagos Diocese. Preaching on the theme “How will your end be?”, the bishop drew inspiration from Mama Gandonu’s exemplary life as a devoted Christian characterised by faith, humility, and service to God and others.
“She was known for her wise counsel, firm guidance, and encouraging words to family and friends,” Bishop Mayungbo said. He urged the mourners to embrace lives of service, reminding them that death is inevitable, and what endures is the impact one leaves on those around them.
Pa James Suru Gandonu, her grieving husband, delivered an emotional tribute, describing his late wife as far more than a spouse. “Sarah was my best friend, my rock, my everything. Every day with you was a gift, though my heart aches with your absence. I am forever grateful for the beautiful life, the laughter, and the unconditional love we shared together. Our time together was a dream; we shared plans together, we built a home together. I’ll carry your memory, your love, and your essence with me forever.”
