Ahead of the resumption of schools on September 18 in Ogun, a Non-Governmental Organisation, Treasured Point of Light Foundation, has empowered no fewer than 350 indigent primary and secondary school pupils in Gbagura Township in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the state.

The NGO during a programme tagged ‘Back-to-School Outreach’, gave out school bags, shoes, lunch bags, food flasks, water bottles and stationery to the pupils, as part of efforts to encourage children of the less privileged.

Speaking to newsmen at the sidelines of the event held at the palace grounds of the Agura of Gbagura, the president of the NGO, Damilola Onebamhoin, said no fewer than 300 hundred students have benefited from the free educational materials.

She noted that the gesture was aimed to help cushion the effect of subsidy removal and the current state of the economy.

Onebamhoin said: “We remember where we came from and as a psychologist, you know every child needs to be loved. Moreso, school is going to resume and we want to just encourage them to go back to school.

“It’s one thing for you to want to go back to school and to have what it takes to go back to school. Giving a child a mathematical set or a school bag can encourage the child to go back to school and increase the enthusiasm”.

She, however, called on the government at all levels to channel funds in the right direction in order to address the needs of the indigents.

A member of the foundation, Oluwaseun Lapite, explained that the organisation had imbibed the culture of giving back to the society yearly, noting that the “increasing demands annually show that the socio-economy of the nation is not getting better”.

She reiterated the call on wealthy individuals and corporate bodies to always help the needy in society.
