The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has warned vice chancellors of universities against running unaccredited/expired engineering programmes.
The caution came as the 153rd ordinary meeting of the council, held in Abuja, approved the report of the accreditation visitations to the Bayero University, Kano, and University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
President and chairman of the council, Mr. Kashim Ali, who presented the outcome of the meeting, said that all concerned VCs would be informed of the implications of running unaccredited/expired programmes.
He also said that COREN would, henceforth, publish annually the status of every university offering engineering programmes in Nigeria, “so that parents will have information before forming opinion on sending their children and wards to study such courses.”
He explained that, from the accreditation visitations to the two universities between January and February this year, nine programmes got full accreditation while two others passed pre-accreditation.
He did not, however, give details of the courses and their spread in the two institutions.
In a related development, the COREN president said the council would organise a workshop on “Outcome-based engineering education and review of benchmark minimum academic standard and accreditation scoring criteria for undergraduate programmes in Nigerian universities” in May.
