Concerned stakeholders and enthusiasts of watersports in Nigeria have raised alarm over alleged irregularities in the upcoming elections into the leadership of the Rowing, Canoeing, and Sailing Federation. In a strongly worded petition, the group has called for immediate intervention from the National Sports Commission (NSC) to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
The petition, signed by Tunde Giwa-Daramola and addressed to relevant sports authorities, highlighted longstanding grievances about the neglect of watersports in Nigeria’s national sporting calendar. According to the signatories, Rowing, Canoeing, and Sailing have been systematically sidelined from major events such as the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, the National Youth Festival in Asaba, and even festivals held in riverine states — areas traditionally rich in water-based sports potential.
“Nigeria is blessed with rivers, lakes, and coastlines across the country,” the petition reads. “With proper support, watersports can provide not only medals for Nigeria but also career opportunities for thousands of youths.”
The stakeholders expressed particular concern over what they described as the “overbearing influence” of the current General Secretary of the Federation, who has held the position for over 14 years. Allegations include manipulation of federation processes, exclusion of credible candidates, and attempts to install loyalists through non-transparent means.
“She has openly boasted that she will handpick loyalists for the incoming board, while systematically disqualifying credible administrators on vague and unsubstantiated grounds,” the petition alleges.
In light of these concerns, the petitioners are calling for the elections to be relocated to Abuja and conducted under the direct supervision of the NSC. They argue that only a neutral venue and oversight from the federal body can restore stakeholder confidence and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
“This single step will restore confidence among stakeholders, ensure that competent administrators emerge through a fair process, and rekindle hope for our athletes nationwide,” the petition concludes.
