Soludo’s wife laments new trend of child abuse, cautions mothers

From Obinna Odogwu, Awka

Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has lamented the latest trend of child abuse in parts of the country, saying she’s saddened by the ugly development.

She made the lamentation at Model Community Children’s Home, Awka, when she visited the orphanage to cook for the children and spend some time with them. She also dished out the food for each of the 69 inmates of the orphanage, played and danced with them before leaving.

In a brief chat with newsmen, Mrs Soludo said  the state government, led by her husband, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, was already taking actions to address the ugly trend in the state.

“It is really a very sad situation now. What is happening with children, the abuse in society now… But the government is really doing a lot to protect them. We are really very worried about how things are going, and we are begging mothers to take care of these kids. I don’t know how a mother can send out a child of seven, eight or nine years to go and take care of adults. And some of these women are so wicked and so inhuman that they treat these children badly,” she lamented.

The First Lady said the government was already tackling the ugly trend, whereby some adults use little children to beg for alms on the streets and in the market places.

“We have really done a lot. Every day, we are taking them out of the streets and arresting the parents. When we came in, it was terrible, the population out there was so high, but now, they have really come down. You hardly see them now because the government is picking them every day out of the streets and sending them back to school,” she said.

Mrs Soludo said her visit to the orphanage was part of the activities she lined up to celebrate children in the state on their big day, the children’s day.

“I came to do children’s day with them; cook for them as their mother. I want them to feel motherly love. So, I came here to be with them, play with them and make them feel that sense of belonging,” she said.
