In response to the recent killing of soldiers in Delta state, the Nigerian Senate’s Joint Committee on Army, Navy, Defence, and Air Force convened a closed-door meeting  with the service chiefs.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, March 20, aimed to investigate the tragic incident that occurred in the Okuama community of the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

A solemn atmosphere pervaded the meeting as a minute of silence was observed to honor the souls of the fallen soldiers. Led by joint committee chairman Ahmed Lawan, discussions centered on the delicate nature of the subject, prompting the decision to conduct the investigation behind closed doors.

Reports from the Defense Headquarters indicated that the casualties included the commanding officer of the 181 Amphibious Battalion, two majors, a captain, and 12 battalion members, bringing the total to 17 lives lost.

Expressing condolences, Lawan extended sympathies to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased. He assured that the military high command had already initiated responses to the incident and vowed that the perpetrators of the attack would face the full force of justice.

The closed-door session underscores the gravity of the situation and the Senate’s commitment to ensuring thorough investigation and accountability in the wake of the tragic events in Delta state.
