From Adanna Nnamani, Abuja
Seplat Energy Plc has called on journalists to begin early preparation for life after active media practice by embracing entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
This message was delivered during the company’s 2025 Annual Media Training Programme recently held in Abuja, which brought together over 50 journalists for two days of practical sessions on business development, digital innovation, and career transition.
A professor of political economy and management expert, Pat Utomi, who led a session titled “Can Managers or Professionals Make Good Entrepreneurs?”, urged journalists to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset, describing entrepreneurship as a “quantum leap in value creation.”
Also speaking, a former Director of the Lagos Business School, Dr. Solomon Avbioroko, in his lectures on “Ego States Profile and Impact on Transactional Analysis” and “Second Phase of Life: Overcoming the Phobia,” said retirement should not be viewed as an end, but an opportunity to explore new ventures and reinvent one’s legacy.
Digital marketing trainer Abiola Adedeji spoke on “Understanding Digital Marketing: With a Focus on Customer Journey Mapping,” explaining how journalists can leverage digital tools to reach wider audiences and build sustainable ventures.
Similarly, lawyer and entrepreneur Uloma Okoro, who took participants through “Developing a Business Model and Writing a Winning Business Plan,” advised media professionals to test business ideas carefully before committing fully. She stressed the need to learn, unlearn, and relearn as part of the entrepreneurial process.
Other facilitators, including Olu Onakoya and Nnamdi Uwaemelulam, led sessions on financial intelligence, venture financing, and media technology trends, urging participants to adapt to evolving market realities and changing audience behaviour.
The training featured interactive discussions and group exercises aimed at helping journalists identify opportunities beyond traditional newsroom work.
Speaking on behalf of Seplat Energy’s Director, External Affairs and Social Performance, Chioma Afe, the company’s Corporate Communications Manager, Stanley Opara, said the programme was designed to enhance media capacity and promote career sustainability.
He commended participants for their commitment to professional growth and said Seplat would continue to support knowledge-sharing initiatives that help journalists adapt to changing industry dynamics.
