Senator Ikpea’s service to Esanland

By Allison Abanum

Prior to his election to the Senate, representing Edo Central, Dr. Joseph Igiagbe Ikpea had built a substantial, unassuming legacy centred on sustained advocacy and community welfare.

Born in Ewato, within the Esan South-East Local Government Area, his life’s trajectory reflects a profound sense of social responsibility. From serving as the Executive Chairman of Esan South-East Local Government to his tenure as the Edo State Commissioner for Minerals, Oil and Gas, Dr. Ikpea’s track record has consistently favored proactive community intervention over political complacency.

His legacy of action was vividly illustrated in 2023. At a time when the critical Benin-Auchi Road had deteriorated into a notorious, life-threatening death trap, Ikpea refused to look away. Disturbed by the severe danger posed to daily commuters and the economic paralysis gripping the region, he independently sponsored a comprehensive, multi-media team of electronic and print journalists to conduct an exhaustive on-the-spot assessment of the highway.

His objective was clear and strategic: drag national attention to this infrastructural failure and force the federal government’s hand. Beyond facilitating this media exposure, Ikpea systematically deployed his expansive personal and professional networks to maintain sustained pressure on relevant authorities. His relentless advocacy eventually catalysed crucial federal palliative interventions, providing immediate safety and relief to thousands of road users.

This defining moment demonstrated his signature approach to governance, delivering tangible relief to his people even before holding federal elective office.

Having won the 2025 senatorial by-election with an overwhelming mandate, Senator Ikpea has transitioned seamlessly from grassroots advocacy to impactful legislative action at the highest level of governance. He has not slowed down; instead, he has amplified the voice of Edo Central inside the National Assembly.

In a major legislative milestone, Senator Ikpea sponsored a high-priority motion in the Senate addressing the escalating environmental crisis across Esan land. Recognising that the region’s natural plateau structure predisposes it to ecological disasters, he directly defense-mapped the “danger zones” threatening his people. He brought national focus to the aggressive expansion of the Ewu Gully in Esan Central, the crumbling infrastructure around the Ukhun-Emaudo Corridor in Esan West, and the severe flooding threatening Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma.

Furthermore, his motion raised a critical alarm over the rapid depletion of Esan land’s forest reserves, targeting the unchecked logging of economic timber like Iroko, Mahogany, and Obeche that has left the soil defenseless. Because of his presentation, the Senate formally urged the Ecological Fund Office, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and NEMA to deploy immediate emergency relief and begin structural remediation.

For seasoned political observers, this immediate impact comes as no surprise. It perfectly aligns with the character of a leader who views public office not as a throne of privilege, but as an active tool for human and environmental preservation. Through the Joseph Ikpea Humanitarian Foundation, his quiet philanthropy continues to shelter and uplift vulnerable orphanages, reinforcing the truth that his leadership is driven by genuine empathy.

As the political landscape evolves, the choice before the people of Edo Central Senatorial District remains distinct and inspiring. To support Senator Joseph Ikpea is to align with a proven path of development, ecological defense, and structural renewal. His voice resonates powerfully in the hallowed chambers, ensuring that the aspirations, safety, and heritage of Esanland are never again left in the dark.
