The Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Benue State Branch, has called on the state government to address challenges facing their members to further motivate them to do their job.
The association, led by the Chairman, Dr. Timothy Akpoghol, made the call on Tuesday, when they visited the Director General of the Benue State Education Quality Assurance Agency (BEQA), Dr. Terna Francis, in his office in Makurdi.
The STAN Chairman who congratulated Dr. Francis on his appointment, expressed the association’s gratitude for the opportunity to discuss pressing issues directly with him.
Akpoghol outlined challenges faced by science teachers in Benue State including non-payment of science teachers’ allowances, lack of functional laboratories, lack of functional workshops as well as lack of instructional materials.
He urged to government to come to their aid to enable them to offer better and quality science education to the children.
Prof Nicholas Ada also commended Dr Francis for his deliberate reforms aimed at improving the quality of education in Benue State.
He reaffirmed the association’s readiness to collaborate with the agency to achieve shared educational goals.
He equally pleaded with the DG to draw the attention of the Governor to the sponsorship request of N160,000 per participant to attend STAN annual conference in Abuja.
Responding, Dr. Terna Francis emphasized the importance of encouraging students to pursue sciences, given the increasing dominance of technology in the world.
He assured the association that their concerns would be duly registered and addressed to enhance the development of science education in the state.
The DG expressed the commitment of Governor Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia to education, which was a key reason for establishing BEQA.
He disclosed that the agency has already made significant discoveries regarding the state of public schools.
