Lagos State workers joined millions worldwide on Thursday, May 1, to celebrate International Workers’ Day at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, under the theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship”.

Despite early morning rainfall, a large crowd of union members participated in a vibrant march-past, showcasing solidarity in colourful, customised attire.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his commitment to workers’ welfare, pledging to implement all demands submitted by labour unions. He announced that the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration would take place at the National Stadium in Surulere, currently under rehabilitation. Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, and Head of Service, Bode Agoro, praised workers’ resilience and highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the working environment.

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos Chairperson, Funmilayo Sessi, commended the state’s implementation of the N85,000 minimum wage and its adjustments, stating, “We thank the state government for implementing the new N85,000 minimum wage.”

However, she urged the inclusion of agency and parastatal workers in the wage rollout to mitigate economic hardship. Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman Gbenga Ekundayo praised workers’ resilience and called for Lagos to receive special status from the federal government, saying, “Increased allocations would help the state meet the infrastructural demands of its growing population.”

The event, marked by unity and vibrant displays, underscored calls for fairness, better living standards, and civic participation.
