Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has committed to bridging the gap between producers and consumers to foster good relationships.
Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance recently at a conference organised by Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) in commemoration of World Consumer Rights Day, in Lagos.
The 2025 World Consumer Rights Day themed: “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles,” is celebrated annually to draw attention to the plight of consumers world over, with a view to ensuring the rights of consumers are not only protected but also promoted.
The governor said his administration will continue to foster mutual understanding and partnerships that drive innovation while addressing market challenges, urging all stakeholders to seize this opportunity to inspire change, promote eco-friendly practices, and uphold consumer rights to collectively build a more sustainable future.
Calling on stakeholders to collaborate with the state on sustainability projects, he said the state values local voices and perspectives in shaping its policies and initiatives.
“We are also exploring international best practices and partnerships to enhance our sustainability and consumer protection efforts.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the annual event serves as a reminder of the vital role consumers play in shaping the economy and the immense responsibility in ensuring their rights are upheld. Commending LASCOPA for its unwavering dedication to safeguarding consumer interests and promoting fair business practices, the governor said in Lagos, consumer protection remains a cornerstone of the administration’s agenda under the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus framework.
“By prioritizing economic sustainability, we aim to create a 21st-century economy where businesses thrive while upholding the rights of consumers. This vision aligns with the principles of fairness, transparency and accountability in commerce, ensuring that every Lagosian has access to quality goods and services.”
On her part, Commissioner for the Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment (MCCTI), Mrs. Folashade Ambrose Medebem, emphasized that consumers play a central role in shaping markets, influencing businesses and driving innovation.
She however, noted that consumers often face barriers such as limited access to sustainable products, unfair trade practices and rising costs of living.
“It is our collective responsibility, as governments, businesses and civil society, to ensure that the transition to a more sustainable future is just, inclusive and beneficial to all.
“As we seek solutions, we must ensure that sustainable choices are not only available but also accessible and affordable to all, especially vulnerable and low-income consumers.
She explained that a just transition means that consumers’ rights to essential goods and services are protected.
“ Every citizen must have access to clean energy, safe food, affordable healthcare, and sustainable housing; businesses must commit to ethical and sustainable practices while private sector players must integrate sustainability into their supply chains, reduce waste, and offer eco-friendly products at fair prices;
General Manager, LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo, emphasized the need for consumers and stakeholders to collaborate in shaping a sustainable future that upholds fairness, accessibility and inclusivity.
He noted that LASCOPA has consistently been at the forefront of advocating for consumer rights, ensuring that its policies, programs and initiatives align with the evolving needs of consumers while fostering a sustainable and just marketplace.
He said under the leadership of the Governor Sanwo-Olu, the agency will continue to strive for greater consumer empowerment, equitable access to resources, and responsible consumption that benefits both people and the planet.
Panelists took turns to discuss on consumer rights; sustainable lifestyle practices; Policy and regulatory frameworks supporting a just transition to a sustainable lifestyle.
