Routelink Group, a Nigerian digital solutions provider, has expanded its financial services operations with the launch of Routelink Microfinance Bank Limited.

The new financial institution, licensed and regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is expected to provide banking services to individuals, microenterprises and underserved communities, with emphasis on savings, deposits, credit and other services permitted under its licence.

The development marks a new phase in Routelink Group’s strategy to move beyond digital payments and build a broader technology-driven financial services ecosystem.

The microfinance bank will complement RoutePay, the group’s digital payments platform serving businesses and consumers.

However, Routelink said the two entities would maintain separate governance structures, regulatory responsibilities and permitted scopes of operation, even as they leverage the group’s technology capabilities where appropriate.

Speaking on the development, Group Managing Director of Routelink Group, Femi Adeoti, said the launch was driven by the need to address financial challenges facing individuals and small businesses beyond payments.

He said while businesses need efficient channels to receive and make payments, they also require access to savings, credit, financial management tools and other services that can support business growth.

“Payments are only one part of the financial challenges faced by individuals and small businesses. Beyond receiving payments, businesses need convenient ways to manage their money, build financial histories, access working capital and obtain financial services that can support their growth,” Adeoti said.

According to him, the group’s objective is to use technology to simplify access to financial services while making them more useful to individuals and small businesses.

“Our vision is to create an ecosystem where technology makes financial services simpler, more accessible and more useful to everyday Nigerians and small businesses,” he said.

Adeoti explained that RoutePay would continue to focus on payment technology, while Routelink Microfinance Bank would provide regulated banking services, including savings, deposits and microcredit.

“RoutePay will continue to focus on payment technology, while Routelink Microfinance Bank will provide regulated banking services including deposits, savings and microcredit,” he said.

He added that the microfinance bank would operate a digital-first model aimed at reducing some of the complexities traditionally associated with accessing financial services.

“Routelink Microfinance Bank is adopting a digital-first operating model designed to reduce the complexity traditionally associated with accessing financial services,” Adeoti said.

The Routelink chief executive said the group believes that combining technology, payments infrastructure and regulated microfinance banking could help bridge financial inclusion gaps while providing greater support for micro and small businesses.

The launch is also part of Routelink Group’s broader strategy of integrating payments, financial services and digital commerce while maintaining distinct regulatory and governance structures for its different businesses.

Adeoti described the launch as the beginning of a broader expansion for the group.

“This is the beginning of a much larger journey for the Routelink Group,” he said.

He said the group’s ambition extends beyond improving convenience in financial transactions to building a technology-driven ecosystem that would enable individuals and businesses to transact, save, access responsible credit and participate more fully in Nigeria’s digital economy.

“Our ambition goes beyond making financial services more convenient. We are building a connected, technology-driven financial ecosystem capable of unlocking opportunities at scale—enabling individuals and businesses to transact, save, access responsible credit, build financial resilience and participate more fully in the digital economy,” Adeoti said.

He added that Routelink aims to become a catalyst for enterprise growth and financial inclusion in Nigeria while gradually expanding its capabilities and impact across Africa.
