From Tony John, Port Harcourt

Rivers State House of Assembly has screened and confirmed 14 commissioner designates.

Also, the Assembly approved Governor Nyesom Wike’s request to appoint 26 special advisers.

The screening and approval yesterday were sequel to a letter dated August 7, 2017, in pursuant to Sections 192 and 196 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) respectively, by the governor.

Among those screened and confirmed were seven former commissioners, three former members of the Assembly and four others, including Emmanuel Okah, Charles Nworgu, Ibibia Walter, Tamunosis Gogo-Jaja, Ukel Oyaghiri, Isaac Kamalu, Damiete Albert Miller, Boma Iyaye and Emeka Onowu.

Others were  Prof. Princewill Choke, Elder Tasie Chinedu Nwabueze, Sylvanus Nwankwo, Prof. Kaniye Ebeku and Rodaford.

In his motion to confirm the nominees, Majority Leader, Martin Amaewhule, said the governor made a right choice in the calibre of persons nominated and called on the House to confirm them.

Speaker  Ikunyi Owaji-Ibani, in his comment,  charged the commissioner-designates and special advisers to carry out their duties in a manner that would bring peace and development to the state.

He, however, added that the Eighth Assembly would continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people without distractions.
