Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 16 (comprising Bayelsa and Rivers States Police Commands), AIG Ben Okolo, has said human rights abuses and harassment of civilians by officers will not be tolerated in his zone.
AIG Okolo made the disclosure yesterday, during a familiarisation tour of the Rivers State Police Command. The Zone 16 police boss also urged personnel of Rivers State Police Command to uphold public trust for their work to be easier. He urged the state police command to maintain and keep synergy with sister agencies in terms of intelligence sharing and other critical areas.
Okolo further tasked the state police command to continue to ensure their divisions and formation are kept safe. The new zonal police boss recalled an incident that happened in Bayelsa command recently, where a police station was attacked and arms and ammunition carted away. He emphasised that arms not in charge should be returned to the central armoury.
Earlier, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi, explained that they would ensure team work in their activities in the command.
Nwonyi revealed that the Rivers State government has promised to revive the C4i tactical unit to checkmate illegal movement of firearms within the state. He further appealed to AIG Zone 16 to look into challenges of officers of the state command in the line of their duty.
