Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate, shocked political watchers on Friday by declaring his candidature to be over and endorsing Republican contender Donald Trump.
For the Democrat-turned-independent, who comes from one of the most well-known political families in America, the choice is unexpected.
Kennedy, an anti-vaccine activist and environmental lawyer, first faced President Joe Biden for the Democratic candidacy. But after preliminary polling indicated that voters would be interested in an alternative to both of the major parties, he decided to run as an independent.
Explaining his decision, Kennedy cited shared policy views with Trump. “There are still many issues and approaches on which we continue to have very serious differences. But we are aligned on other key issues,” he stated at a press conference, highlighting areas like border security, free speech, and ending foreign wars.

The impact of Kennedy’s endorsement on the tightly contested race between Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris remains unclear. While early polls showed Kennedy garnering significant support, those numbers dwindled in recent months.
The announcement sparked immediate reactions. At a Las Vegas campaign rally, Trump hailed Kennedy as “a great guy, respected by everybody” and expressed his gratitude for the endorsement. Nevertheless, Kerry Kennedy, Kennedy Jr’s sister, voiced her displeasure on social media, saying that the endorsement “betrayed the family’s values” and that it was a “sad ending to a sad story.”
Political analysts remain divided on the potential significance of Kennedy’s endorsement. Considering Kennedy’s prior low polling numbers, some, like Drexel University professor William Rosenberg, believe the impact will be minimal. Still others, like Trump pollster Tony Fabrizio, feel that Kennedy’s base of support might influence voters in crucial swing states.
The significance of the unexpected Trump-Kennedy alliance will likely become clearer as the November 5th election draws closer.
