The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has advocated that the resuscitation of Nigeria’s refineries would be all the solution to the economic crisis plaguing the country.

Congratulating the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on the successful re-streaming of the Port Harcourt Refinery after several years, NUPENG said it would go a long way in addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges, alleviating hardship for workers and citizens, and fostering economic stability.

The union’s leadership, William Akporeha, president, and Afolabi Olawale, general secretary, reasoned that the commencement of crude oil processing and the dispatch of petroleum products from the refinery were a landmark achievement that resonated with the aspirations of Nigerian workers and citizens.

“On behalf of the National Executive Council and the entire membership of our union, we extend our warmest congratulations to the Group CEO, Mr. Mele Kyari, and the entire management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited on this monumental achievement of successfully re-streaming the Port Harcourt Refinery after several years,” the union said.

According to NUPENG, the milestone demonstrates NNPCL’s unwavering commitment to achieving energy independence and fostering sustainable economic growth for the nation.

It further commended the NNPCL’s management’s exemplary commitment and resilience in steering the Port Harcourt Refinery Company’s rehabilitation to completion, despite numerous challenges, noting that it reflected the highest standards of dedication and determination.

“We are very pleased with the achievement of over 16 million man-hours without a single loss time injury, which is a testament to meticulous planning, professionalism and the hard work of all involved; an accomplishment that brings pride to our union’s members,” Akporeha said.

He also commended the indispensable support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as the collaborative efforts of the NNPCL’s board of directors, staff, and contractors.

According to the NUPENG boss, “This accomplishment is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved through collective effort and shared commitment to national progress.”

He added further, “As the refinery resumes production and begins loading critical products such as premium motor spirit (PMS), automotive gas oil (AGO), and household kerosene (HHK), we are reminded of the essential role this progress plays in addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges, alleviating hardship for workers and citizens, and fostering economic stability.”

He, however, stated that while the successful re-streaming of the Port Harcourt refinery stands as a beacon of hope, it also reinforces the union’s collective optimism for the rehabilitation of the Warri and Kaduna refineries.

He said the union earnestly hoped and prayed that these projects would also come to fruition soon, providing the much-needed stimulus to the nation’s economy and further easing the energy burden of Nigerians.

“We remain confident that NNPCL will deliver on these expectations,” he said assuring the NNPCL of the union’s commitment as a steadfast partner in the collective journey toward achieving a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable oil and gas sector that uplifts every Nigerian worker and citizen.
