Restricting FCT for LG election is too harsh – Ubani to Wike

Senior Advocate, Monday Ubani

By Lawrence Agbo

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Monday Ubani, has criticised the decision of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the imposed restriction of movement ahead of the Area Council elections, describing the measure as excessive for a local government poll.

The FCT Administration had announced a 22 hours restriction of movement from 8pm on Friday, February 20, to 6pm on Saturday, February 21 as part of security arrangements for the council elections.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, on Arise Television, Ubani argued that shutting down movement in the FCT for almost an entire day over a local government election was too harsh and economically disruptive.

According to him, while security considerations during elections are important, long hours of restriction does not reflect the nature of the exercise, which is not a national election.

Ubani urged the minister to reconsider the directive, stressing that many residents of the FCT rely on daily income to survive.

“Restricting movement for 22 hours because of a local government election is excessive,” he said.
