The House of Representatives Committee of Interior has said it would probe the utilization of resident permits,, as well as issuance of international passports in the country.
The chairman of the committee, Ahmed Abdullahi disclosed this, at an interactive session with the IRIS Smart Technology and Continental Transfer technique. He said the planned probe is a fallout of petitions and complaints by Nigerians.
Abdullahi, who represented by the Vice Chairman, Ganiyu Adele, said the investigation would enable the parliament identify any shortcomings or irregularities in the system and put in place necessary reforms.
According to him, the probe was imperative so as to uphold the integrity of immigration procedures and ensuring that citizens and residents receive fair and timely treatment.
The committee had in a letter to relevant companies requested them to furnish the parliament with the agreements, Memorandum of Understanding( MoU) or contracts with the Federal Government, with a view to ensuring that their services
conforms with global best practices.
The committee had said it will investigate the expatriate quota as part of its statutory mandate. According to the lawmakers, it is worrisome that no one can give accurate figure of expatriates in the country.
Similarly, the House has said it frowned at the degradation of the environment by oil producing companies in the Nigeria.
The House Joint Committee on Environment, Petroleum Resources Upstream, Petroleum Resources Downstream and Climate Change said it will identify erring companies and hold them accountable for their actions.
The chairman of the joint committee, Pondi Gbabojor, who stated this, in Abuja, said “the abundant natural resources should have been a source of prosperity and development; rather, the host communities have suffered pollution and land degradation.”
