The Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) has blamed lack of adequate lecturers in Radiography courses in Nigerian universities on mass movement of qualified manpower abroad to seek for greener pastures otherwise known as Japa.

The board equally said the situation has led to many universities in the country seeking accreditation in the field of Radiography, not to meet one of the criteria.

RRBN Registrar, Prof. Mark Okeji, who made the disclosure during the induction of the pioneer Radiography graduands of Gregory University, Uturu (GUU), Abia State, feared the trend may not stop until government addresses the poor condition of health workers, particularly radiographers.

Prof. Okeji, represented by Macaulay Ejimofor, disclosed that when he assumed office as the Registrar/Chief Executive of RRBN eight years ago, only seven universities were accredited to train radiographers, but expressed joy that presently, 18 universities, including four private universities, of which GUU is one, have been accredited to offer Radiography.

“In the past eight years, the RRBN has undergone remarkable transformation. We have modernised our accreditation processes, strengthened the indexing and examination systems, digitised records, improved compliance monitoring and expanded opportunities for postgraduate and continuing professional development,” Prof. Okeji disclosed.

Founder of the university, Prof. Gregory Ibe, said the institution is making waves as a trusted training institution for health professionals in Nigeria.

“We are proud of the recent achievements where we saw the graduation of 83 medical doctors, 21 nurses and midwives, and two physiotherapists, all happening between June 4 and July 29.”

Represented by Prof. Uwaoma Uche, Prof. Ibe said the accomplishments underscored the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and her mission to equip students with the skills, knowledge and expertise needed to succeed in their chosen fields. He told the graduands their expertise in Radiography will play a crucial role in patient care, diagnostics and treatment.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Cele Njoku, represented by Prof. Regina Ogali, tasked the graduands on the need to contribute their quota in advancing healthcare services.

She urged them to uphold the high standard for which the radiography profession is noted.

The guest speaker on the occasion, Ini Ekanem, urged the graduands to have passion for their job if they want to succeed in their chosen profession. He enjoined the graduands to uphold the values of the radiography profession.
