Princewill Albert Targets More Titles After Historic Ibom Open Triumph
Fresh from winning the 2026 Ibom Open Golf Championship, Princewill Albert has set his sights on conquering even bigger tournaments, declaring that his next targets are the Nigeria’s Cup and The Prestige Golf Classic.
Albert, who emerged overall champion of Nigeria’s most prestigious amateur golf tournament, said years of hard work, consistency and self-belief finally paid off as he lifted the coveted Ibom Open title.
Speaking after his victory at the Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo, Albert revealed that he began to see himself as a potential champion when his game became more consistent.
“I started to believe and work towards better scores when my shots became more consistent without losing strength. That helped me stay focused and trust in my ability to win,” he said.
The new champion credited much of his golfing development to resident golf professional of Ibom Golf Club, Emmanuel Ochayi, whom he described as his favourite coach.
“Coach Emmanuel Ochayi is my favourite coach among all those who have tutored me in golf,” Albert stated.
Albert also disclosed that Northern Ireland golf star Rory McIlroy remains his biggest inspiration in the sport.
“My biggest golf mentor is Rory McIlroy,” he said.
The victory marks a major milestone in Albert’s golfing career, coming after 12 years of dedication to the amateur game. The accomplished businessman has built an impressive record over the years, winning several titles, including the Ibom Golf Club Governor’s Cup and other prestigious club competitions.
Despite his latest achievement, Albert insists he is not resting on his laurels.
“My next target is to win the Nigeria’s Cup and The Prestige Golf Classic,” he said.
Reflecting on the organisation of the championship, Albert praised the introduction of stricter scorekeeping measures, saying they helped ensure fairness throughout the competition.
“The best thing the organisers did this year was accurate score-taking by having marshals stationed at every hole. It eliminated score manipulation completely. They should maintain that standard going forward,” he noted.
The champion dedicated the victory to his family, particularly his wife and sons, acknowledging the sacrifices they have made to support his golfing ambitions.
“I dedicate this victory to my wife and sons, who have been directly affected by my love and dedication to the game. I have sacrificed quality family time and many opportunities to create memories with them because of training and competition. Their support has been invaluable,” he said.
Albert also paid tribute to his elder brother, Senator Bassey Albert, for his encouragement and support throughout his journey in golf.
“I dedicate this victory to Senator Bassey Albert for his unwavering support and encouragement throughout my golfing journey and in helping me achieve this dream,” he added.
Albert’s triumph at the 2026 Ibom Open not only secures his place among the country’s leading amateur golfers but also serves as a testament to perseverance, discipline and belief in one’s abilities.
