…Police blame attack on retreating bandits, put casualty figure at 16

The Plateau State Police Command has clarified that the attack on Zurak community in Wase Local Government Area of the state, which left about 40 people dead was carried out by bandits fleeing from heavy bombardment from security forces.

The command also gave the casualty figure from Monday’s attack as 16, comprising nine locals and seven bandits, while one of the bandits was arrested while seeking medical attention.

Police spokesman, Alfred Alabo, said security forces, made up of a combined team of Department of State Services (DSS) and other security operatives, had carried out aggressive onslaught against bandits at the Bangalala Forest in Wase local council, a border between Plateau, Bauchi and Taraba States, respectfully, where seven bandits were neutralised in the area.

He said other bandits, who fled during the operation, attacked Zurak and Dakai Villages, leaving in their trail nine people dead and six houses burnt.

Alabo said: “Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, has made more deployment to the area and has directed the Area Commander of Langtang to relocate his base to Wase Local Government Area with immediate effect.

“The command is also pleased to announce to the state government and the people of Plateau State that one of the bandits, who escaped and went to seek treatment at a hospital in Wase, was arrested with gunshot wounds. The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Jos for discreet investigation. The commissioner of police conveys his heartfelt condolences to the government and the good people of Plateau State, most especially the peace loving citizens of Wase LGA.”
