The Plateau State government has launched extensive dredging, gully reclamation, and drainage construction to prevent flooding during the 2025 rainy season. Additionally, the government is clearing gutters and waterways to ensure free water flow during heavy rains.

Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change and Mineral Development, Peter Gwom, announced these measures during a ministerial briefing in Jos, marking two years of Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration. He explained that the ministry is collaborating with the Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) to raise awareness, enforce environmental compliance, and support the governor’s vision for a safer, cleaner Plateau.

Moreover, Gwom highlighted the significant contributions of the World Bank’s Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) and the European Investment Bank’s Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management (EIB-NEWMAP) projects, both supervised by the ministry, in tackling environmental challenges.

He stated, “We are doing everything to avert flooding in the state this year. Apart from sensitising the people on indiscriminate dumping of waters on gutters and waterways, we’re dredging and expanding water outlets and gutters to ease and free flow of water during this rainy season.”

Gwom also noted that Mutfwang’s administration has driven exponential growth across sectors, with the ministry boosting revenue generation. He added, “The Plateau people have come to embrace this government as their own and are ever ready to support the government in achieving its objectives.”
