Special Task Force Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) has inaugurated a new 17-man Peace Committee to end the spate of killings in Irigwe Land and the entire Bassa LGA and environs.
The committee replaced the 36 Man Joint Committee inaugurated on 11 Sep 21 to work out modalities to achieve peace and reconciliation between the various tribes in Bassa, Jos North and South as well as Riyom Local Government Areas of Plateau State.
The 17-Man Implementation Committee, our correspondent gathered, is to implement the recommendations of the 36-Man Committee as it affects Irigwe Land, which became redundant over time.
It was dissolved on 10 May 2024 and the subsequent establishment of a new 17-Man Peace Committee in Irigwe Land, which was inaugurated on Wednesday at Headquarters 3 Division Auditorium.
Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, Major General Abdulsalami Abubakar, speaking while inaugurating the committee at the inauguration event held at Headquarters urged the members not to be partisan in the discharge of their tasks, inorder not to leave room for reservations from parties involved.
The commander, who is also the the General Officer Commanding 3 Division Nigerian Army Division Nigerian Army (NA), pledged the operation’s readiness to continually work with other security agencies to drive home the peace agenda of Plateau State Government. He further tasked the committee members to ensure the implementation of the recommendations within three months to facilitate peaceful coexistence in the area.
Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Ephraim Usman said the formation of the committee was a step in the right direction towards furthering the peace process embarked upon by the State Government.
The governor urged the committee members to work in harmony to achieve the objectives of the committee. He further pledged government’s continuous support to Operation Safe Haven and its operations.
Transition Implementation Committee Chairman Bassa LGA represented by Mr Asuhik Adik and Director-General, Plateau Peace Building Agency represented by Mr Elkanah Izam, In their separate remarks, advised the committee to shun tribalism during the course of the assignment.
They maintained that the formation of the committee has enhanced civil-military relations, creating an avenue for rapid response to resolving communal conflicts and other minor security challenges.
Chairman of the peace committee, Mr Musa Audu, assured that the committee will discharge its duties diligently within the timeframe given by the commander.
The committee members were subsequently presented with engagement letters by the commander.
