Philanthropist splashes scholarship on 60 UNN students

Financial assistance came the way of 60 indigent undergraduates of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) of Delta State origin as they received a scholarship award of N50,000 each from a philanthropist.

The beneficiaries were presented with the scholarship certificate the cash price of N50,000 each in Nsukka on Wednesday during a ceremony tagged, “2nd Disbursement of Chief Dr. & Dr. Yolanda Ududi Ozah Scholarship Fund for Indigent Delta State Students of the UNN.”

Prof. Ike Onyishi, Dean, Faculty of Social Science, UNN urged the beneficiaries to ensure that the financial assistance from Chief Jude Ozah, the “Isagba of Ogbashi-Uku kingdom in Delta State was put into their academics as it was meant for.

Onyishi Explained that Ozah had in April 2021 while chairing a public lecture of the faculty Instituted a N10M scholarship grant for indigent undergraduates of Delta State origin in UNN to assist them in their education.

He thanked the donor for investing in the education of the beneficiary noting that the financial assistance will go a long way in assisting the students to meet up with their academic responsibilities.

“Ensure that you use the money for the purpose it was meant for, to encourage the donor to invest more in education.

“The beneficiaries should not only make judicious use of the money but should also study hard to ensure that they make good grades on graduation to justify the financial assistance they received,” he said.

Onyishi commended the disbursement committee for their diligence and dedication in selecting those in need of financial assistance.

“Many undergraduates from Delta State applied for financial assistance this year, but the disbursement committee after screening selected the indigents among them.

“This financial grant will be done every academic year according to the donor, so as an indigent student of Delta State origin in UNN, if you didn’t benefit this year you may benefit next year,” he said.

The Don noted that the first disbursement of the financial assistance which started in 2021 was interrupted in 2022 as a result of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) nationwide strike which lasted for 8 months.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiary, Ekwenuya Adanne, from the Department of Sociology, and an indigen of Ogbwashi Ukwu community in Antioch South Local Government Area of Delta State thanked the donor and promised that they would study hard to make good results on graduation, as well as to reciprocate the donors gesture.
