Persons with Disabilities have called for a United action towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a statement marking this year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities, Florence Austin,
Interim head, CCD said, “on the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, we come together under the theme “United in Action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities.”

The statement said the global observance emphasised the collective effort required to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Austin noted that the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a blueprint for a more sustainable and equitable future.

“This year’s theme underscores the pivotal role persons with disabilities play in realising these goals. By fostering unity and collaboration, we aim to break down barriers, promote accessibility, and create an environment where everyone can actively contribute to building a better world.

“As we celebrate diversity, we recognise the unique strengths and perspectives that persons with disabilities bring to our communities.”

She added that it was imperative that the society work hand in hand to eliminate discrimination, enhance accessibility, and empower individuals with disabilities to fully participate in all aspects of life.

She enjoined all to join them in promoting a world where every person, regardless of ability, can thrive. “By standing united in action, we can truly rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities”, she said.

The International Day for Persons with Disabilities which is observed globally on December 3 each year, aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development and to increase awareness of the challenges they face.
