Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has pointed out that the most important element in nation building is the people, who form the core of every society.
For him, the growth and development of every nation is hinged on five pillars, which are politics, population, prosperity, protection and partnership.
While emphasising on ‘Population’ as the most crucial, the former president noted that the progress of a nation depended greatly on the value attributed to its citizens, and urged that deliberate efforts should be committed into uplifting the people.
He gave this advice during a panel discussion at the book launch of his daughter, Kofo Obasanjo- Blackshire, held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) Lagos on Friday.
“All the other pillars revolve around the population. The way you regard and value the people reflects on the nation and dictates the pace of its growth. These values include education, health, food, housing, security and all the elements that would ensure the population is catered for.
The book entitled “Pillars of Statecraft: Nation Building in a Changing World” focuses on these five pillars with the addition of “Prayer and Pleasing God” as the sixth pillar. It highlights and analysis prevalent issues in global concept politics and challenges facing the country, Africa and at world level while giving well thought out recommendations at addressing them.
