PDP crisis: Tambuwal defects to ADC

PDP crisis Tambuwal defects to ADC

By Lawrence Agbo

Aminu Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Governor of Sokoto State, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The former governor attributed his decision to the PDP’s ongoing internal turmoil, leadership conflicts, and widening rifts.

Early on Thursday morning, Tambuwal released a statement on X announcing his defection.

He confirmed that he had sent a written resignation to his ward chairman before formally joining the ADC with his companions and followers.

“Today, after deep reflection and consultations, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, and I have communicated my resignation to my ward chairman in writing,” he stated.

“The PDP has been a significant part of my political journey, and I remain grateful,” he added.

Tambuwal acknowledged the PDP’s influence on his political career, which includes terms as Speaker of the House of Representatives and a second term as Governor of Sokoto State, but claimed that the party’s internal decline had made it impossible for him to stay a member.

“The persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the PDP have made it increasingly difficult to continue my membership in the party.

“These developments have unfortunately weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party and have necessitated this decision,” he said.

Tambuwal outlined his reasons for selecting the ADC as his new political home, stating that he was certain the organization provided Nigeria with a more powerful means of advancing democracy.

“I am convinced that this decision is guided by my belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development,” he stated, reaffirming his dedication to democracy, justice, and national unity.

In the run-up to the upcoming election cycle, Tambuwal’s defection comes after a number of notable individuals, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, defected to the party, establishing the ADC as a more legitimate opposition platform.
