From Lateef Dada, Osogbo
Bola Oyebamiji, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has expressed deep concern regarding the deteriorating state of healthcare in the state.
While addressing attendees during the inauguration of his wife, Dr Sekinah Oyebamiji, as the state president of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) in Osogbo on Thursday, Mr Oyebamiji pledged to revitalise the health sector for the benefit of the public if elected governor.
He said: “Osun has remained stagnant due to the neglect of critical sectors, especially healthcare, which demands urgent intervention.”
He noted that all levels of the health system—primary, secondary, and tertiary—are currently non-functional and in dire need of attention.
“It is on record that the health sector has become moribund in the state. Little or no effort has been made by the current administration to revamp our health system. Qualified medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, are grossly lacking,” Mr Oyebamiji said.
Citing current statistics, he noted that Osun is home to approximately 799 primary healthcare centres, 57 secondary health centres, and three tertiary health centres, all of which are yearning for revitalisation.
“I will declare a total overhaul in the health sector if elected governor. We must prioritise the welfare and well-being of our people and recognise that health is indeed wealth,” Mr Oyebamiji said.
In her acceptance speech, Dr Sekinah emphasised her commitment to inclusiveness, effective health advocacy, and delivering physical projects aimed at improving the lives of women and children.
“As a foremost association dedicated to ‘heal with the love of a mother,’ we call upon ourselves to focus on retaining excellence in delivering quality healthcare services,” she said.
She called on all members of MWAN to join her in expanding their reach to vulnerable populations, especially women and children, through strategic health communication, capacity building, and quality service delivery initiatives.
