An All Progressives Congress (APC) party member was reportedly shot by suspected political thugs on Saturday, causing panic in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

At Oluode-Aranyin, Osogbo, where the incident occurred, a resident, Sola Hammed, said the hoodlums arrived in an unmarked vehicle and began shooting sporadically into the air.

Hammed said people ran for safety to avoid stray bullets, but they later heard someone crying for help. He said the victim, identified as Taofeek Mustapha, was shot in the leg while running for his life.

The victim said he was wearing an AMBO-crested cap, linked to the APC governorship candidate’s campaign branding, at the time of the shooting.

He claimed that the attackers pursued him because he was wearing the cap, shot him, and then retreated to their vehicle before driving away.

He alleged that the attackers used Accord Party insignia, with three of them alighting from the vehicle armed with guns before opening fire again.

The Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident, saying an investigation had commenced.

Separately, the police spokesperson also said that two residents of Ilesa who had been kidnapped by suspected political thugs had been rescued.

The victims were reportedly abducted by thugs alleged to be loyal to the APC.

The political atmosphere has been tense ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state, as the two major political parties — the APC and Accord — have continued to engage in daily accusations and counter-accusations.
