The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has expressed deep concern over credibility of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to conduct a free and fair election.
In a statement jointly signed by the IPAC Chairman, Secretary and Publicity Secreary, Pastor Victor Akande, Mr. Oluseye Odesola and Dr. Gbenga Afeni, on Thursday, the council describes the practice of the OSSIEC as ‘questionable’ saying that IPAC is concerned with the commission’s apparent attempt to manipulate the electoral process.
Noting that the OSSIEC in a publication, declared 42 working days for party primaries to commence, the IPAC said the commission has failed to reference relevant electoral laws or guidelines that should guide their operations.
“IPAC is deeply concerned that OSSIEC’s approach signals a reluctance to conduct transparent and credible elections. The lack of communication with political parties since the initial meeting raises further doubts about OSSIEC’s commitment to a fair electoral process. The current administration’s shift towards caretaker coordinators instead of holding timely local government elections adds to the uncertainty surrounding upcoming polls.
“IPAC calls upon the Osun State House of Assembly to intervene and prompt OSSIEC to adhere to constitutional obligations within a reasonable timeframe. Additionally, the citizens are closely monitoring H.E Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke’s actions, expecting him to uphold his commitment to grassroots democracy by ensuring credible elections when needed,” IPAC said.
It therefore emphasized the importance of transparency and adherence to democratic principles, asking “will there be local government elections in Osun State, or will political maneuvers overshadow the democratic process?
