Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described his uncle Ademola Adeleke’s victory in the Osun governorship election as a major political battle fought against a formidable coalition.
Davido spoke on Tuesday while addressing journalists at his country home following Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 election.
He congratulated the governor on his re-election and claimed that several influential political figures had mobilised against him during the contest.
“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” Davido said.
The singer attributed Adeleke’s victory largely to the support of Osun voters, praising them for standing by the governor and protecting their votes during the election.
“I can’t remember how many times I cried that day because the love was massive,” he said, recalling his experience on election day.
Davido said Adeleke’s victory should serve as an example to other political leaders, arguing that politicians who deliver for their constituents would earn their support at the polls.
“My uncle should be an example to all other people out there. It shows all other governors out there that if you work for the people, the people will be with you and God,” he said.
He also thanked Osun residents for supporting the Adeleke family, despite what he described as attempts to intimidate voters and influence the election through vote-buying.
Beyond the election, Davido said he would now focus more on youth and sports development in Osun. As chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, he said he had delayed some initiatives until after the election.
“As chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, I want to do a lot of things but waited for the election to be over,” he said.
Davido said one of the projects under consideration was a recreation centre equipped with football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts to give young people opportunities to develop and showcase their sporting abilities.
Adeleke secured a second term after defeating his closest challenger, All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Oyebamiji, in the August 15 poll.
Davido said his attention would now shift from the election to initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for young people across the state.
