South African singer Tyla has called for African unity, saying she hopes to see a continent where Africans stand together despite national differences.

Speaking at the South African Music Awards, Tyla said she is proud of her nationality but also stressed the importance of a shared African identity.

“I’m just happy to be South African. I am happy to be African. Most of all, I pray one day to see a unified Africa.”

Her remarks come amid growing tensions between South Africa and other African countries over xenophobic attacks against African migrants.

The tensions have also affected South African entertainers, with some losing performance opportunities in other African countries. Tyla herself faced backlash in Nigeria and subsequently removed her planned Lagos concert from her tour schedule.

Her call for unity therefore comes at a time when cultural ties between South Africa and other African countries are facing increasing strain.
