… Mass burial ongoing
From Jude Owuamanam, Jos
No fewer than 24 people have been killed and several others injured when gunmen attacked Binper community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State..
Tens of gunmen were said to have invaded the community between midnight on Monday and the early hours of Tuesday, moving from house to house and hacking residents to death..
Director of Public Affairs, Mwaghavul Youth Movement, Tubwot Joël Sunday, confirmed to our correspondent that the attackers who were heavily armed clearly overwhelmed the locals who could not defend themselves.
According to him, the alleged report of an earlier attack was a distraction as the invaders had planned for a massive attack.
Sunday said that 24 persons were confirmed dead , some missing while several others sustained serious injuries
He said that the victims who sustained injuries had been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the victims were being given a mass burial as at the time of filing in this report.
The youth leader said that community leaders and residents were making efforts to locate those still missing.
His account was corroborated by a resident Daniel Musa, who told newsmen that the residents were asleep when the invaders struck.
He said: “Heavily armed persons attacked our village last night and in the early hours of today, They were moving from house to house, opening the doors of people who were sleeping and slaughtering them.
He described the attack as unfortunate and called on the new Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, to act quickly and and apprehend the culprits.
Though efforts to get clarification from the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful, police sources told our correspondent that security operatives had been deployed to affected community.
