Designer Ozioma Obiuku expands her impact in fashion through mentorship and professional training for aspiring designers.
Luxury fashion house OOBIUKU Clothing, led by Founder and Creative Director Ozioma Obiuku, has officially launched the OOBIUKU Fashion Academy, a new initiative designed to nurture the next generation of fashion talent in Nigeria.
The academy, which offers intensive 3–6 month training programs, represents a bold step in Ozioma’s mission to expand her impact beyond couture design into mentorship, skills development, and creative leadership.
Since establishing OOBIUKU Clothing in 2017, Ozioma has become known for her bespoke bridal and couture designs, dressing hundreds of clients across Nigeria and internationally. Her work has consistently been praised for its originality, craftsmanship, and ability to blend cultural heritage with modern elegance. With the academy, she is extending that commitment to excellence into education, equipping aspiring designers with the skills and knowledge required to build sustainable fashion careers.
The curriculum at the OOBIUKU Fashion Academy is designed to be both comprehensive and practical. Students will receive hands-on training in core areas of fashion design, including sewing techniques, garment construction, pattern drafting, freehand sewing, corsetry, and embellishments. Specialized modules in fashion illustration and detailing will allow participants to sharpen their creativity and technical accuracy. Beyond the creative aspects, the program emphasizes the business of fashion, with courses on branding, client management, and entrepreneurship, ensuring that graduates leave with not only technical ability but also business acumen.
According to Ozioma, the academy was born from her personal journey as a designer.
“My journey in fashion has shown me the importance of mentorship and practical training. With this academy, my goal is to give aspiring designers not just technical skills, but also the confidence and entrepreneurial mindset to build sustainable brands.”
The academy’s first cohort begins in March 2019, with students enrolled in either the three-month or six-month track. Classes will be held in Lagos, offering opportunities for hands-on experience, portfolio development, and one-on-one mentorship directly from Ozioma and her team of professionals. Students will also benefit from exposure to industry best practices, gaining insights into what it takes to thrive in Nigeria’s competitive fashion market.
