One person was killed and many others injured in a bloody clash that erupted on Tuesday night between two rival cult gangs over a girl in the Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos.
According to the police, eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the fracas.
Violence had erupted, grounding business activities around Iyana-Ipaja and Agege areas, as commuters hurriedly scampered to safety to avoid being caught in the cross-fire.
Trouble started at the venue of a party in Elere area of Agege, where some youths attacked a lady. After the attack, the girl returned to her base at Abule-Oki area of Ipaja and told her boyfriend what happened. Her boyfriend, it was gathered, organised some youths to attack members of the gang at Elere, to avenge the girl’s assault.
During the fracas, members of rival gangs fell on themselves with dangerous weapons such as guns, machetes, broken bottles and charms.
The hoodlums barricaded the road, smashed vehicle windscreens and snatched bags from passersby.
Samuel Habib, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, said dozens of hoodlums, armed with dangerous weapons, took to the streets, smashing vehicle side mirrors and snatching bags at random.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who confirmed the incident, said the corpse of one of the victim was recovered, while eight suspects were arrested.
