The death of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has renewed attention on Nigerian film stars who lost their lives after battling cancer.
Daily Sun brings to you seven Nollywood stars who died following cancer-related illnesses:
1. Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’
Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, was a veteran actor in the Yoruba film industry whose career spanned several decades.
He died after battling stage-four cancer. His family had earlier disclosed his condition and appealed for support towards his treatment.
2. Sadiq Daba
Veteran actor and broadcaster Sadiq Daba died in March 2021 after battling leukaemia and prostate cancer.
Daba was known for his work in television and film, including his role in Eagle Wings. He had publicly spoken about his cancer diagnosis and treatment.
3. Aisha Abimbola
Yoruba actress Aisha Abimbola, popularly known as Omoge Campus, died in Canada in 2018 after battling breast cancer.
She was known for her roles in Yoruba-language movies and also worked as a film producer.
4. Stella Ikwuegbu
Veteran actress Stella Ikwuegbu died in June 2024 after battling cancer.
She featured in several Nollywood productions and was particularly known for playing motherly and elderly roles.
5. Ethel Ekpe
Ethel Ekpe, who gained recognition for her role as Segi in the television comedy series Basi and Company, died in February 2024 after battling cancer.
She also appeared in several Nigerian television and film productions during her career.
6. Karibi Fubara
Actor and producer Karibi Fubara died in December 2021 after battling kidney cancer.
He had previously spoken about his diagnosis and treatment and featured in productions including God Calling and Smart Money Woman.
7. Ify Onwuemene
Actress Ifeyinwa Onwuemene died in May 2021 after battling stage-four endometrial cancer.
She underwent treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy, before her death.
The deaths of these Nollywood personalities have highlighted the devastating impact of cancer and the challenges many patients face in accessing timely diagnosis and treatment.
